The Parkinson’s Foundation, a leader in driving better health outcomes and quality of life for people with Parkinson’s, along with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has created Exercise Guidelines for people with Parkinson’s.

The Parkinson’s Foundation Exercise Accreditation Recognition distinguishes Parkinson’s-specific exercise education programs and courses that align and adhere to Criteria for Exercise Education Programs and Competency Framework for Exercise Professionals.

foreverfitness, offers two of the Parkinson’s Foundation accredited exercise programs: PWR! Moves, and Rock Steady Boxing.

Exercise will make your life better!

It’s not easy facing the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Exercise is essential for the well-being of individuals who have PD: recent research shows that exercise not only benefits your physical and psychological health but may actually slow, halt or even reverse the progression of Parkinson’s disease. The earlier that exercise is begun after diagnosis, the better the results.

Parkinson’s specific exercises address common symptoms of PD such as gait problems, rigidity/stiffness, tremors, freezing posture, balance, depression, stress, and falls. Flexibility and mobility will improve. Regular exercise provides a sense of accomplishment and an increased confidence in the ability to perform daily activities that may otherwise present a problem to those with PD. Simply put, targeted, PD- specific exercise will improve your quality of life!

PWR! MOVES Group Exercise

PWR! Moves is part of the national exercise program developed by Dr. Becky Farley, PT, MS, PhD, a nationally recognized leader in the field of PD-specific exercise.

The class is a 1-hour group exercise class for individuals with Parkinson’s disease with minimal to moderate levels of disease severity. The class consists of a series of targeted movement exercises that are PD-specific and are designed to optimize learning and plasticity. The goal of individuals in this class is to not only improve their performance in class, but also learn to recognize when they need to self-correct their slow/small movements for better mobility, posture and balance in everyday life. The emphasis of the class is on amplitude and intensity. This class also provides cognitive, vocal and visual challenges to include dual and multi-tasking exercises. The class promotes an environment for camaraderie and FUN. Many different types of exercise equipment, props and music are used to add variety and challenge to the class.

Rock Steady Boxing: (RSB) Cincinnati is an affiliate of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), which is a non-contact boxing-inspired workout taught by certified RSB coaches. This is a 1-hour group exercise class that is a fun and effective form of exercise to people who are living with PD. RSB enables people with Parkinson’s disease to fight their disease by providing a non-contact boxing-style fitness program that improves their quality-of-life and sense of efficacy and self-worth. RSB provides an encouraging approach, inspiring maximum effort, speed, strength, balance and flexibility. Boxing works by moving your body in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as you progress through the workout. RSB classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s, can actually lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier/happier life. No boxing experience is necessary and people of all ages are invited to participate.

Classes are partially funded by a grant from Parkinson’s Support and Wellness (PSW) to help defray the cost of the class to participants.
